A cycling trip on the Karakoram Highway (KKH) from Gilgit town to Khunjerab Pass is a thrilling and challenging adventure, offering stunning views of the Hidukush and Karakoram ranges and glacier along the KKH. Khunjerab borders on China in the North of Hunza valley. The KKH replaces ancient Silk Route which can be viewed frequently while riding.

Highlights

Suitable time for riding is from May – October
Total distance is about 270 km one way
Total 5-6 days are recommended (This can vary depending on pace, weather conditions, and rest days).
Mesmerizing valleys and tourist points like Rakaposhi View Point, Chalt, Nasirabad, central Hunza, Baltit and Altit Forts and Ganish old settlement are on the way.
As we approach upper Hunza Attabad Lake, Gulmit, Passu Cones, Batora Glacier and Hussaini Suspension Bridge are on the way which can be enjoyed of course free of cost.
Area is peaceful with high literacy rates among population. Locals are welcoming and supportive all the time.
The highest ATM machine is located at Khunjerab Pass.

Day 01 :

Gilgit to Rakaposhi Point (about 70 km)

Time: 6-8 hours
Description: The route to Hunza is beautiful with spectacular views of Rakaposhi and Ultar Sar peaks. Hunza is a great place to rest and explore.
Accommodation: Rakaposhi point hotels.
Elevation Gain: 4900-6000 ft.

Day 02 :

Rakaposhi Point to Gulmit, Hunza (about 60 km)

Time: 5-6 hours
Description: A scenic route through the valley with views of the Passu Cones and glaciers. This is a challenging part, so take breaks to enjoy the views.
Accommodation: Basic hotels or campsites in Gulmit
Elevation Gain: 7,900 ft

Day 03 :

Gulmit to Sost, Hunza (about 55 km)

Time: 6-7 hours
Description: Sost is the last town on the KKH towards Khunjerab pass. From Sost we start rapid gaining height towards Deh and then to Khunjerab Pass. The terrain will become rougher as you near the pass, so be prepared for a challenging day.
Accommodation: Hotels or basic guesthouses in Sost.
Elevation Gain: 9200 ft.

Day 04 :

Sost to Dih

Distance: about 40 km
Time: 5-6 hours
Description: Dih is a small hamlet with check posts on the KKH and it is almost between Sost and Khunjerab pass. Deh is recommended to stay and take rest as after Sost we start rapid height gain. Make sure to carry enough water and snacks.
Accommodation: camping is recommended at Deh as no such hotels are there.
Elevation Gain: around 11,500 ft

Day 05 :

Dih to Khunjerab

Distance: about 45 km
Time: 6-8 hours
Description: The final stretch to the Khunjerab Pass. This is the most challenging part, with steep ascents and high altitudes. Be sure to carry enough water and snacks.

No accommodation at Khunjerab, as it is a border checkpoint. Returning to Sost the same day or set up camp nearby.

Elevation Gain: Khunjerab Pass is at 15,397 ft.
